JOURNEY INTO WITCHCRAFT

“In 1963, Mr Eric Maple took us on a unique ‘Journey into Witchcraft’…”

Underwood’s photograph of author Eric Maple talking to participants of the Journey into Witchcraft,

“...a conducted tour of Candewdon…”

Candewdon is located in Essex

“...calling at various parts of the haunted village…”

“…hearing first hand ghost stories…”

“…and witch legends…”

“…seeing the mysterious ‘devil’s resting-place’…”

“…seeing the pond, which was probably the scene of ‘witch-swimming’…”

Witch swimming derived from the “trial by water,” an ancient practice where suspected criminals and sorcerers were thrown into rushing rivers to allow a higher power to decide their fate. It was believed that the guilty floated and the innocent sank.

“…and seeing the graveyard…”

“...where a headless ghost is said to wander…”
